Team Navy September Focus

September has been an incredibly busy month; handing out new apparel, acclimatizing to new schedules and new expectations, and Navy has performed admirably with whichever task they’ve been responsible for. STM’s grade 7 group has no shortage of energy, which is a good problem to have when you’re on the ice two or three times each week, not including practices and games with club teams. One of the keys to directing that energy, however, is to focus on specific challenges and tasks that encouragement development in a specific skill area. Passing is obviously an important part of the game, and Team Navy has set a goal to make one thousand passes before the Christmas break.

Passing The Puck

Other than on-ice testing, Navy’s primary focus has been passing the puck. Through instruction of proper techniques Navy has been given a crash course on passing the puck with power, zip and accuracy. Our goal is to pass the puck one thousand times by the time the Christmas break rolls around; a lofty goal, sure, but one that is attainable with creative use of the entire ice surface and a dedication to improving our passing skills. Passing the puck might seem like a natural skill, but it only becomes natural after countless repetitions of proper technique. Here are 3 main points to consider when passing the puck:

  1. Keep your hands off your body. Direct both fists toward your target, and move your arms independantly of your torso.
  2. Pass the puck hard. If your intended target can’t handle the pass, then you’re helping them to improve their receiving skills, so don’t ease up.
  3. Use your legs. Passing with accuracy and power is dependent on a player’s entire body, so keep your centre of gravity low, and use your legs for added power and stability as you strive to hit the tape every time.
